The Hunger Games Essay-Writing Contest

 
 
  1. To join the essay contest, the contestant must write an essay that answers the following question:
    • (The Hunger Games essay) If you were to join the Hunger Games, what special skill would you have that would make you win? Give reasons why.
    • (Catching Fire essay) If you were to choose between a man who has saved your life more times than you count, and a man who has taught you how to survive each day, who would you choose? Give reasons why.
  2. The entry must be an original essay based on the story of The Hunger Games trilogy, published by Scholastic, Inc.
  3. Entry must have the following elements:
       a. Must be written in English.
       b. Must not exceed 1 typewritten page in lettersize paper.
  4. Entries shall be judged on the following criteria:
       a. Originality of concept (35%)
       b. Familiarity with the story of The Hunger Games trilogy (35%)
       c. Writing & Style (30%)
  5. There shall be 8 winners each for the Hunger Games and the Catching Fire essay contests:

  1. Contestants may submit more than one entry.
  2. Contestants must put the following information on the cover page for each entry: Name of Contestant, Title of Essay, Age, School or Office, Complete Home Address, Contact Numbers, E-Mail Address (if any) and Signature. They must also indicate the NBS branch they regularly visit and most accessible to them.
  3. The file name must indicate the name of the contest and the name of the contestant: Ex. “Hunger Games Contest – Juan dela Cruz.doc”
  4. Entries must be emailed to nbs.thehungergames@gmail.com
  5. Deadline of submission of entries for the HG essay is on October 15, 2009. Deadline of submission of entries for the CF essay is on November 15, 2009
  6. Judging of HG entries shall be on October 23, 2009 at the the Philippine Book Fairs and Education, Inc. (PBEI) - Scholastic office at the Penthouse 1, Prestige Tower, F. Ortigas Jr. Avenue, Ortigas, Pasig City. CF entries shall be on November 23, 2009.
  7. Judges shall be Scholastic and NBS representatives, a newspaper writer, and a member of the academe.
  8. A participant can win only once. If a participant with more than one entry wins more than once, s/he gets the bigger prize.
  9. Prizes are transferable but not convertible to cash.
  10. Winners will be notified through registered mail, e-mail notices, featured in press releases in major newspapers of general circulation, posted at the Customer Service area of all NBS branches, and announced in the National Book Store websites.
  11. Metro Manila/NCR winners can claim prizes at the Philippine Book Fairs and Education, Inc. (PBEI) - Scholastic office at the Penthouse 1, Prestige Tower, F. Ortigas Jr. Avenue, Ortigas, Pasig City. Provincial winners can claim their prizes at the nearest National Book Store branch in their provinces specified in the registered mail.
  12. To claim prizes, winners must present the registered mail and any valid identification card (school ID, passport, parent’s SSS, PRC, professional license, etc.).
  13. Employees of National Book Store, Inc., Abacus Books and Card Corp., Philippine Book Fairs and Education, Inc. and their relatives up to second degree of consanguinity or affinity are disqualified from joining this promo.
